BETTER PROJECT INFORMATION, BETTER QUOTATIONS
A steel building quotation is only as accurate as the project information behind it. Supplying a few essential details at the beginning helps avoid unsuitable assumptions, repeated revisions and prices that cannot be compared properly.
1. Intended Use
Explain what the building will do: workshop, warehouse, machinery store, garage, equestrian building, agricultural store or another application. Intended use can influence loading, access, insulation, ventilation and Building Regulations considerations.
2. Required Dimensions
Provide the external width, length and eaves height where possible. If those dimensions are not yet fixed, describe the vehicles, machinery, storage system or working area that must fit inside. Door clearances and usable internal space often determine the correct dimensions.
3. Delivery Postcode
The postcode helps establish the project location, delivery distance and local design information. It also allows early consideration of wind, snow and site exposure before detailed engineering.
4. Doors, Windows and Access
List the number, type and approximate size of roller doors, personnel doors and windows. State where large doors are required and provide the vehicle height and width where clearance is critical.
5. Cladding and Insulation
Confirm whether the building is expected to be single-skin, insulated or a mixture. Mention condensation control, rooflights, colour preferences, internal lining or fire-boundary requirements if they are already known.
6. Site and Delivery Restrictions
Tell us about narrow roads, restricted gateways, overhead cables, soft ground, steep access or limited unloading space. Delivery and offloading assumptions should be established before the order, not discovered when the vehicle arrives.
7. Planning and Programme
State whether planning permission or Building Regulations approval is likely to apply, whether drawings are required for an application and when the building is needed. A desired date is useful, but it should not be treated as confirmed until design, approval and manufacturing requirements are agreed.
Useful Attachments
A site plan, annotated sketch, photographs of the access, door schedule or a simple hand drawing can answer questions more quickly than a long email. They do not need to be professionally prepared at the quotation stage.
Comparing Steel Building Quotations
Check whether each quotation covers the same dimensions, structure, cladding, openings, calculations, drawings, delivery and optional items. A lower headline price may simply exclude components or services included elsewhere.
